ESTIMATE RESULTS RELEASED...

Shiselweni - 204 111 SWAZILAND is home to close to 1.1 million people. This is according to the estimates of the recently concluded 2017 population and housing census. The figures reflect an increase of 74 789 in population since the last population census 10 years ago.
In 2007 the country’s population stood at 1 018 4449 while in 2017, 1 093 238 was recorded.
The 2017 estimate of the country’s population was announced by the Deputy Prime Minister Paul Dlamini who was representing the Prime Minister Dr Sibusiso Dlamini. He said the census was completed successfully in May.
“It is the seventh comprehensive, scientifically-based census in continual series over the past 60 years, the first one having been conducted in the year 1956. A census of this nature has since been conducted without interruption in 10 years,” said Dlamini.
Present during the launch of the 2017 population and housing census preliminary report were Minister of Economic Planning Prince Hlangusempi, Hhohho Regional Administrator Prince Tshekedi, UNFPA Resident Representative Sharareh Amirkhalili, Members of Parliament and other government officials. The ultimate goal of this national undertaking is to enhance the quality and security of life of the people of Swaziland through the provision of reliable and timely data.
“As can be appreciated, such data formulates, service delivery and for the monitoring and evaluation of development plans and programmes,” said the DPM. Among other objectives, the 2017 population and housing census is expected to provide valuable socio-economic data for monitoring progress and achievement in vision 2022, the national development strategy, and a host of other sectoral development index (SDI) and Agenda 2030, the United Nations inspired Sustainable Developments Goals.
He said the 2017 census was the first census in Swaziland in which mobile technological was used for the collection of information.
Therefore, the answers to the census questionnaires were directly recorded on tablets. “This revolutionary change significantly improved efficiency in the monitoring and evaluation of daily progress, and the overall conduct of the census, as well as enabling follow-up with the field staff,” he added.
He also expressed deepest gratitude to Statistics South Africa for lending the country 3 000 tablets that were used in the data collection. Thus it was no cost to Swaziland and a highly generous expression of South Africa’s cooperation.
“I would like to also thank MTN Swaziland for providing the connectivity for the data collection, thus ensuring that all went smoothly during the process of data collection,” he thanked.
